An Instagram square post is the classic 1:1 feed image format at 1080×1080px. It previews in the profile grid without cropping, making it the best choice for a consistent feed layout. While portrait (4:5) and landscape (1.91:1) are also supported, the grid alignment is still based on squares, so 1:1 remains the most stable format. This tool lets you crop rectangular photos to 1080×1080px and save them instantly.

Instagram now supports portrait (4:5) and landscape (1.91:1), but the profile grid still defaults to square previews, so 1:1 creates the most consistent layout.
Instagram automatically downsizes it to 1080px. Higher-resolution originals retain better quality after the downscale, so starting above 1080px is recommended.
Photos can be up to 30MB. Supported formats are JPG and PNG. For high-resolution photos, use an image compression tool to reduce size before uploading.
The first image in a carousel sets the ratio for all subsequent images. Using 1:1 square for all slides ensures every frame displays without cropping.
JPG is smaller and uploads faster, while PNG preserves sharpness for text-heavy or graphic images. Use JPG for regular photos and PNG for designed graphics.
