How to Change the English Name on a Korean Passport
You cannot change the romanized name on a Korean passport just because you prefer another spelling. It must fit one of 11 reasons in the Enforcement Decree of the Passport Act, and each reason needs its own proof.
Allowed reasons
Article 3-2(2) of the Enforcement Decree lists these reasons.
- The spelling clearly differs from the pronunciation (not if it is the official romanization or a widely used spelling).
- You have used a different English name abroad for work or study.
- Matching the family surname when traveling together.
- Adding, changing, or removing a spouse’s surname.
- The spelling has a clearly negative meaning.
- Your Korean name was legally changed.
- Your first passport has not been used yet.
- You are 18+ and still use the spelling chosen before 18 (once only).
- Matching an immigration visa, or a same-name entry ban abroad, or other cases approved by the Minister.
Where to apply and fees
A name change means a passport reissue. Apply in person at a city or district office in Korea or at a Korean embassy abroad; it cannot be done online.

Before you change
- Your old passport becomes invalid once the new one is issued.
- A new ESTA is required after a new passport or a name change.
- A valid U.S. visa in the old passport can be carried with the new passport; do not remove it.
- Check with your airline about existing bookings.
